How to cut a talisman, after the Picatrix.

This bench follows the Picatrix (Arabic Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm), the medieval handbook of images. The Latin book taught Europe that a talisman is not a charm you buy ready-made. It is a figure made in a fit hour, of a fit matter, with a spoken aim, and usually passed through smoke.
The old writers called the work nigromancia only as a name for the science of images. We keep their method and leave their boasts. The sky is an ephemeris. You are the operator.
Hour. Substance. Word joined to will. Miss one and you have a drawing. Picatrix I.5: words in images are as the spirit in a body, insofar as they are joined with certitude.
One sitting. No extra lines. Do not recut later.
1. Wash
Hands clean. Plate, tool, incense, and candle set before the hour sounds.
2. Smoke the blank
At the first minute, light incense. Pass the empty plate three times through rising smoke. Do not blow on it.
3. Cut the figure
Copy the workshop image, or your own, in one sitting. A scriber for metal. A brand for wood.
4. Speak once
Hold the plate in the smoke. Speak the petition once, clearly, aim fixed. No second draft.
5. Smoke the image
Pass the finished plate three times through the smoke. Let the smoke rise of itself.
6. Wrap
Linen. Keep it where the charm directs. Do not recut. Do not show it about.
The catalogue figures are examples. The sages allowed the operator to join a name, a petition, and a private mark to the image — still in one sitting, still in the hour.
A personalised plate is still a Picatrix image only if the hour, the substance, and the will agree. Extra ornament is not extra virtue.
The Picatrix is blunt: the image is not enough. The plate must be of the nature of the work. Venus on iron is a quarrel. Jupiter on lead is a closed door. Metal takes a scriber or a punch.
The soft red metal. Love, art, the purse that opens, the garden, peace between people. First sittings live here. Do not ask it to bind or to cut — that is iron, and we do not pack iron.
Tin-rich, lead-free British pewter. Abundance, honour, justice, the teacher, the open door. Harder than copper. Keep it for wealth, study, the 2nd and the 9th — not for love-charms that belong on copper.
Copper and tin fired together. The Sun’s gold is beyond a first kit; bronze is the working stand-in. Honour, a name that should hold, a shop. Harder. Be patient with the point.
Gold (Sun), silver (Moon), iron (Mars), and lead (Saturn) are not in the first run. Gold and silver wait on cost; iron wants its own ethics; lead we will not post.
Wood takes a brand. Heat the pen with caution, away from linen, away from paper. A steel point will only bruise the grain.
Strength, doorways, a long life in one place. The oak does not hurry. Protection of a house, honour, a vow you mean to keep.
Temple wood. Incorruptible, scented. Solar: preservation, a clean fame. Protection, consecration, anything you would put in a chest and find unchanged.
The orchard. Love, offering, beauty, a gift. Do not put a binding on apple; the tree will not carry it honestly.
The rod of poets and diviners. Letters, skill, the sudden right word. Study, speech, craft, and finding. Mercury’s metal is mixed; hazel is how a first kit speaks for him.

Wrap the plate. Do not test it the same night. The old books are not a medical device, a court, or a bank. Health, children, justice, and liberation figures are historical forms. You are responsible for what you make and say.
Study the Picatrix itself. This booklet is a bench card, not the text. Sky-Sage finds the hour. The forge packs a metal kit (copper, pewter, bronze, a scriber) and a wood kit (oak, cedar, apple, hazel). Wood wants a branding pen, not a scriber. Payment, when it is wired, is for matter — not for a result.
